In Wordlessness

The English Langauge has lots of words

We have words like baulster, knight, and buttress,

These words, of course, have no relation.

Words like mother and orphan do.

Almost every language has these same

words

That are different only in sound.

In German orphan means Waise.

These are not pretty words.

Lacking the lyrical flourish when one elongates the L.

But

They are words in moments of wordlessness,

the moment of chaos, of nothing, of the void.

And even if we've lost everything,

We still have the word.

There is no word for a brother who has lost his brother.

There is no word for a mother who has lost her son.

Not in the English language,

Or German,

Or Greek.

Not in any langauge

At all.
