Scored a 62 pound drop of 4140 from the scrap yard. While I might not be quite able to work 5.5” material, I will some day soon! I also found another drop of 4140 that was a bit smaller but 3.75” round is still no joke! There was also a bunch of 8620 in 2.5” and 3” but I am not familiar with that alloy. Anyone use it before?
Normally I don’t trust scrap yard steel, but these drops still had the manufacturers certs attached so it was too good to pass up. All in all 260 pounds of tool steel for 40 dollars. Support your local scrap yard! Let them help you.

Finished forging this French Pein hammer today. I’ve been seeing a lot of hammers that are stubby and covered with hammer marks and while some may enjoy that style, I’m more a fan of elegance and cleanliness of work. It’s taken me years to get to a point where clean results are repeatable, but it’s getting there.
This hammer has never seen a wire brush and I find the activity superfluous. If you are forging carefully, the piece comes off the anvil clean.

Hand tools are consumables. After 100+ holes, they can get pretty worn out. Here’s to 100 more. There’s really only one to punch a hole and it’s with one of these jammers. No lube or fancy tool steels, just proper tool design and use. You want a round hole? Slot punch. Square hole on an angle? You guessed it, slot punch.

This batch of cabinet pulls marks the 100th time I’ve got through this operation. I got these 20 holes punched in about an hour and a half and while I was punching I was reflecting on the process/conception of making these, and I like the design and process but after 100 operations I feel myself bored with this piece. I want to eventually develop a new cabinet pull, but this current design only came to fruition out of the necessity of a commission.
With thousands of years of metalworking history it can be difficult to develop processes and products that are new, but it is necessary. Originality is important to me, to not yield to the rounding hammer, the ball pein textured hardware. I’m not sure why it’s important to me, but is it to you?

I’m happy to release my new 14” woks. These have been in the development process the last several months and it’s nice to finally be able to offer a large wok to my customers. Each piece starts as a 15” disk and is slowly forged to a depth of 4.25”. The base is also 4.25”.
Each wok requires well over 10,000 hammer blows up to achieve the traditional and classic form of the wok. There are no short cuts taken, no plasma cut parts or press formed/spun pieces.
In one of the last photos, you can see the comparison to my 12” wok. These 14” woks make them look tiny!
